Benefits of hydrotherapy

30 August, 2017 | Staying healthy

Hydrotherapy is derived from the Greek word meaning water healing and can be used to relieve discomfort and promote physical well-being.

The benefits of hydrotherapy include:

1. Reduced muscle tension and pain

The water in a hydrotherapy pool is maintained at 34 degrees Celsius, which allows for the immediate and effective transfer of heat into the body. The heat relaxes tense muscles, and the buoyancy of the water also relieves tension in the limbs and supports aching muscles.

2. Muscle repair

The heat increases blood flow to tissues which helps to heal injured tissues and rehabilitate damaged muscles or joints.

3. Boosted immune system

The increased blood flow and circulation of white blood cells around the body speed up the removal of unwanted materials from the body which strengthens the immune system.

4. Stress relief

Hydrotherapy reduces the level of stress hormones circulating in the blood stream. The result is an increase in relaxation and general well-being.

Effects of hydrotherapy

Initial treatment:
• After 5 minutes - blood pressure and pulse rate return to normal.
• After 10 minutes - circulation improves in hands and feet.
• After 15 minutes - the muscles relax and become more receptive to passive exercise, fibrous tissue becomes more pliable and responsive to stretching, encouraging the release of lactic acid and other toxins from the system.
• After 20 minutes - aches and pains decrease in severity.

Ongoing treatment:
• After 3 treatments - the immune system is improved.
• After 5 treatments - emotional stress and physical tension are noticeably reduced.
• After 10 treatments - pain relief is longer lasting and there is a greater sense of well-being.
• After 20 treatments - there is heightened resistance to disease and depression, the skin is clearer and ‘glows’ with health, and muscle tone and mobility is improved.
