6 January - Detox Tips from Aspara

Come January many of us feel the need for a detox having overindulged over the festive period. The common Christmas diet is generally high in sugar, fat, caffeine, and alcohol, which can lead to a build-up of toxins that the body struggles to eliminate.

Giving your system a detox can help revitalise your body and improve your overall health and well being.

Here are our six tips to kick start your January detox and wake up your sluggish body.

1. Drink more water

Aim to drink at least two litres of water per day to help flush the toxins from your body and rehydrate your cells. Increase your consumption following a workout.

2. Cut down on sugar and fat

Cutting out the obvious sugars and saturated fats from your diet is a great start to a new, healthier regime.

Watch out for barley malt, corn syrup, dextrose, fruit juice concentrate, maltose, maple syrup, molasses as these are all sugar disguised as something else.

It's important to have some "good" fats in your diet (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated), but avoid saturated fats.

Preparing your own meals rather than relying on pre-packaged is the easiest way to avoid unnecessary fats and sugars.

3. Reduce your alcohol intake

Excessive alcohol consumption puts a strain on your liver. Give your liver a rest and help it recover from your excesses over Christmas by laying off the alcohol for a while. If you really fancy a drink stick to the recommended maximum two-three units per day.

4. Cut out the caffeine

Excessive caffeine causes a number of negative effects on our body and can be addictive. Try to cut down on your caffeine intake by replacing coffee/tea with caffeine-free varieties or drinking alternatives such as herbal teas or boiled water.

If drink a lot of coffee/tea, try and reduce your intake gradually as you will suffer withdrawal symptoms.

5. Get moving

You don’t necessarily need to hit the gym but try and incorporate more activity into your day. This could be as simple as walking the stairs rather than using the lift or parking slightly further away from your intended destination and walking the final distance.

Gradually build on your level of activity as your fitness increases.

6. Be kind to yourself

Remember to take some time out to relax and enjoy some ‘me time’. A massage or thermal mud treatment is a great way to improve your circulation and help revitalise your body.
